Innovation and tradition – since 1965
It all began in the mid-1960s when Udo-Wolfgang Benthin came up with the idea of coupling and marketing two 2-axle wagons to form a triple-axle wagon unit in order to keep pace with the fast-moving industry. At that time, ton tariffs were used instead of today’s wagon loads, and with higher payloads (ton per wagon) and one wagon instead of two, the competitive advantage was huge. However, he now had to design, produce and manage the wagons over their entire life cycle.

So, on 9 February 1965, TRANSWAGGON AG opened its doors in Zug (Switzerland) and TRANSWAGGON AB was established in Helsingborg (Sweden). The designers had already been busy, and the first 50 triple-axle TRANSWAGGON wagons soon appeared for the transportation of timber and agricultural vehicles and machinery. They could also be loaded via tight coupling.

Growth through innovation
In the 1970s and 1980s, revolutionary covered sliding wall wagons (HB2) with aluminium walls - an absolute novelty among freight wagons - were offered for rent. In addition to this, flat wagons with a lowered bed to rail (1,060 mm above rail), wagons with removable bodies (ESP), and bogie or axle wagons with replaceable running gear (Railship) were offered for increased capacity and greater flexibility. Subsidiaries were founded in Germany, France and Italy, and continuous technical development throughout the 1990s and 2000s saw more wagon types added to extend the fleet from approx. 5,000 in 1990 to approx. 7,500 in 1999, approx. 10,500 in 2006 and approx. 13,500 in 2016.

The expansion into Eastern Europe and Turkey represents a further advance in complementary services. Over the years, the systematic renewal program of the wagon fleet escalated with the acquisition of Swedish Nordwaggon (2006) and the takeover of ex AAE (2016) and ex Nacco (2019) to bring the fleet up to approximately 13,500 wagons. In recent years, TRANSWAGGON has achieved a leading position throughout Europe as a service provider for direct customers and rail transport companies and as a pioneer in online services (CIS and Freight Buddy®) in the following key areas: automotive, mechanical engineering, pulp & wood, household appliances, non-perishable consumer goods, metals and non-hazardous chemical products.
